The Bleu Provence Distillery, an initiatory and sensory journey to the land of lavender
Near the center of Nyons, the beating heart of the Drôme Provençale, the Bleu Provence Distillery is an essential stop on the Routes de la Lavande®.
Here you can see, touch, breathe, taste lavender, lavandin and many other aromatic plants. You can witness their transformation into essential oils and learn about their uses: massage oils, perfumes, soaps and shower gels, condiments for cooking… Better than a visit, the Bleu Provence Distillery offers an initiatory and sensory journey to the kingdom of colors and scents of Provence!
The secrets of the still
At each harvest, in July for the lavender, the tractors leave their loads to the forks of the professionals, who precipitate them in the tanks, in contact with the water vapor. Then begins the distillation, where the lavender expresses its virtues in the form of essential oil. This oil is extracted directly from the alembic by steam drive.
It is then packaged on the spot in bottles or transformed into perfumes, soaps, condiments… which can be found at the Bleu Provence Distillery Boutique. It can also be purchased as is by the biggest luxury brands and the French art of living, as shown in this report.
A family business
The company was born in 1939 in Nyons. Around Philippe Soguel, who has been managing it since 1994, it has remained a family business. At the top of the list of values it defends is the preservation of the resource, which has been weakened by climate change. With the local producers, whose income it contributes to guarantee, the Distillerie Bleu Provence encourages and participates in the development of a sustainable agriculture, organic, protective of the environment and the landscapes of the Drôme Provençale.
Follow the guide!
As a mediator and “passer-by” of knowledge about lavender and aromatic plants, Philippe Soguel has made the distillery part of the tourist ecosystem of his territory and an essential stop on the Routes de la Lavande®. We start by visiting it, with the authorized and playful comments of a real professional of the distillation. Dedicated to lavender and aromatic plants, a 150m2 discovery area, accessible to all, presents the landscapes, botany, culture, history and distillation of these plants of Provence. During the summer season, weekly soap workshops allow children to experience the transformation process of aromatic plants.
Lavender, an essential and protected perfume
Did you know that fine lavender is the only flower to be defended by an A.O.P (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée). Since 1981 the qualities of its essential oil are controlled and protected. Only producers in the Drôme, Vaucluse, Alpes de Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes, whose communes are located above 800m altitude, can benefit from it. This very high quality oil has its place in the Bleu Provence Distillery Boutique. On the spot or online, you will also find all the other essential oils you can dream of: lavender and lavandin, of course, but also thyme, bergamot, verbena, lemon, mandarin, cinnamon, ginger, cypress, clove, etc.
Distiller of emotions
Lavender can be taken home, to bring back a little bit of Provence with you, to perfume yourself, to scent sheets and linens, to use it in well-being mode, for washing and massage. But it can also be tasted. On the spot, around a table of the Pause Bleu Thé, the tasting space of the Distillery Bleu Provence. At the Boutique, again, where gourmets will be able to try and buy lavender macaroons or lavender honey beer. Ah, this honey of lavender, unctuous, so perfumed, with a delicate taste and long in mouth.
Find all the emotions of an initiatory, playful, poetic, educational and ecological discovery at the Bleu Provence Distillery. Here awaits you the warm and welcoming soul of Provence.
